Did the CRA call you? Know if it’s a SCAM!
It’s that time of the year again! Yes, tax season is starting again soon and we want everyone prepared and ready!

This week, we’ll get into the common CRA scams that you or someone you know may encounter during the next few weeks. It is always best to know what these scams are so you won’t ever fall for any of them!

First off, there’s the phone scam. Someone may call you saying they are from the CRA. So how do we know if it is really the CRA calling you and not a scammer?

Here are the things the CRA may do IF they contact you by phone:
• The CRA may verify your identity by asking personal information such as your full name, date of birth, address and account or social insurance number.
• The CRA may ask details about your account, in the case of a business related issue.
• The CRA may call you to inform you of the beginning of an audit process.

Here are the things that CRA will NEVER do in case they phone you:
• The CRA will never ask information about your passport, health card or driver’s license.
• The CRA will never demand immediate payment by Interac e-transfer, bitcoin, prepaid credit cards or gift cards from retailers such as Amazon or ITunes.
• The CRA will never use aggressive language or threaten you with arrest or sending the police.
• The CRA will never leave voicemails that are threating or give personal or financial information.

If you do receive a phone call saying they are from CRA and you are still unsure, you can also let the caller know that you want to verify first by calling the official CRA phone number listed on their website. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
